Every Turning Sun campus features an art studio, or Atelier, where supplies are stored at student level so they can help select materials for creating. In classrooms, visual arts are incorporated into daily invitations and project work. Children are introduced to a variety of artistic mediums and encouraged to explore them fully. Messes are expected and add to the fun of learning.
Classes are visited weekly by a specialist to engage the students in singing, dancing, and expressing themselves musically. Different instruments are introduced during each visit and students enjoy hands on experience with drums, acoustic and electric guitar, tuba, and even a stand up bass. Classes craft an original song each year featuring elements from their project investigations.
Students ages two and older retreat to a spacious area of their school once each week to enjoy yoga. During these classes, children experience a quiet, relaxing environment which allows them to become more in tune with their inner voices and physical strength. Yoga connects back to and strengthens the play and work in each classroom, and is a time to acknowledge the light in each of us.
An Environmental Educator at each campus helps children develop a relationship with nature and appreciation for their environment through weekly outdoor classes, seasonal celebrations, school-wide taste tests, and collaboration with community experts and parent volunteers. We strive to ensure our students understand where healthy food comes from, so every TSS features compost stations, worm bins, and raised bed organic gardens which are sown, fertilized, maintained, and harvested regularly by our students as part of our farm-to-preschool program.
